{"id":203,"date":"2016-07-19T13:27:56","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T12:27:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amdf-centre.org\/?p=203"},"modified":"2026-07-05T20:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T19:24:08","slug":"south-sudanese-editor-arrested-after-calling-on-president-kiir-vice-to-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amdf-centre.org\/2016\/07\/19\/south-sudanese-editor-arrested-after-calling-on-president-kiir-vice-to-resign\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudanese Editor Arrested After Calling On President Kiir &#038; Vice To Resign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kaduna, 19th July 2016 &#8211; Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) is calling on South Sudan authorities to immediately and unconditionally release South Sudanese journalist Alfred Taban, arrested for doing his job.<\/p>\n<p>A colleague told reporters that Taban, editor-in-chief of an independent English-language daily Juba Monitor, has been arrested and detained since, July 16.<\/p>\n<p>Taban and Anna Nimiriano, the paper&#8217;s editorial director were summoned to National Security Service headquarters for Taban\u2019s use of his column to call for the resignation of President Salva Kiir and the first vice president, Riek Machar, saying both of them have failed in leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Nimiriano was released but Taban was immediately put in the detention. \u201cThey took him straight to detention. They told the soldiers in my presence to arrest him.\u201d Nimiriano told\u00a0reporters<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cThey arrested him at 4pm. They said the opinion article Alfred wrote in his column yesterday (Friday) was an incitement and ordered the closure of the paper with immediate effect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The column by Alfred Taban was headed, \u201cSalva Kiir, Dr. Riek Machar should be removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stated in the article, \u201cPresident Salva Kiir and his first deputy Dr. Riek Machar have completely failed,\u201d adding that they were either unable or unwilling to control their forces \u201cwho killed scores of people in Juba, including soldiers and civilians and looted the properties of many people of Juba.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese troops have also raped women, extorted money from passengers and drivers and burnt down houses of innocent civilians. The two leaders declared a ceasefire only after hundreds of people had already been killed,\u201d wrote the chief editor.<\/p>\n<p>AMDF Coordinator, Sekyen Dadik says &#8220;South Sudan government must allow journalists to practice freely without any form of harassment.
